Maslow's hierarchy of needs in a work situation

The psychologist Abraham Maslow suggested a theory that states that people need to satisfy five basic needs. These needs are arranged in a hierarchy. Maslow believed that people at fist have to satisfy the lowest level of needs and only then, we will satisfy each higher level. However, unfulfilled needs lower on the ladder would hinder the person to climb to the next step. Some studies show some disadvantages of this theory but Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory is still significant motivation tool for many managers.

Maslow enumerates five categories of needs:

  • Physiological Needs (basic moments of survival like air, water, food, stable employment and salary)
  • Safety needs(Safe and stable physical and emotional conditions)
  • Belongingness needs(social acceptance)
  • Esteem Needs( respect and recognition)
  • Self-actualization or self-development needs

This hierarchy is divided into two groups: deficiency needs (physiological and safety) and growth needs (belonging, self-esteem and self-actualization). A person won’t be able to develop if his or her deficiency needs won’t be satisfied.

When Maslow’s hierarchy of need is used in a work situation, a manager should make sure that all lower needs are satisfied. Normally, a person who beginning their career will think about physiological needs such as safe environment and proper wages. If these deficiency needs wouldn’t be satisfied it could lead to poorer performance and lower job satisfaction. In addition, the manager ought to create a proper climate in which employees can develop their fullest potential.

When these basic needs are satisfied a person will want to satisfy his “belongingness” needs. People really want to work in an environment where they have some interaction with people and are accepted in the organization. So effective interpersonal relations are indispensable.

When “belongingness” needs are satisfied, an employee will want to satisfy his esteem and self-actualization needs. A person needs respect and recognition from others. Manager ought to use praise and awards and encourage participation to satisfy esteem needs

To meet self-actualization needs manager should give training, provide challenges and encourage creativity. Self-actualization will make employee interested in development.

The needs of people change with time and managers should always adapt to employees’ changing needs to keep people motivated.
