Publications on Racism Against Muslims

The majority of Muslims - 57 percent - experienced with certain forms of bigotry or racism in the past. These results were derived from a study of Muslim life in Sydney - Australian city with the largest population.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Western Sydney and University of Charles Stuart and the Islamic Academy of Sciences and the Australian Research, shows that 600 Muslims in Sydney were interviewed. The main results of the study, are presented by Australian ABC network were, shows that:

• 57 percent of respondents experienced racism;

• 62 percent experienced racism in the workplace or in the process of job search;

• 1 out of 10 Muslims in Sydney recorded a "very high" rate impact of racism;

• 86 percent believe the friendly relations between Australian Muslims and non-Muslims;

• the unemployment rate among the respondents (8.5 percent) higher than in the whole of Sydney (3.7 per cent).

Tougher treatment of Muslims, according to scientists, can be the result of growing jihadism in the Middle East, due to which the part of the radical Muslim Australians have joined to the ranks of the "Islamic state." Last year, the Australian government conducted a series of raids against the local Muslims who were suspected in the creation of Islamist terrorist groups. According to some estimates, among the militants "Islamic state" in Iraq and Syria there is about 250 Australians.

Particular attention should be paid to such a concept as "a strong sense of belonging", which is characteristic of many Muslims in Australia, despite the growing climate of fear of Islamic people. Moreover, according to the study, 97 percent of Australian Muslims believe in the possibility of living in a community that includes different cultures. This figure is higher than the national average, and it refutes the stereotype of Muslim communities, according to which they are intolerant to other traditions and cultures.

Nine out of ten Muslims, who participated in the study, said that it was important that their children were accepted as Australians, and two-thirds indicated that they had mixed socially with non-Muslims.

It is worth remembering polarization conversations about Islam and Muslims in other parts of the world, including the United States, where Muslim groups have warned that their communities feel that they are the scapegoats, particularly against the background of the terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November.
