Southern Cross with a Cause

The debate over the fate of the Confederate flag after the massacre of blacks in the South Carolina Church broke out with renewed vigor. For some Americans this flag is a symbol of racism, for others - a legacy of the southern states and civil war. Against demonstration flag there are the President and many influential Republicans.

In the US, acute inflamed public debate surrounding the fate of the Confederate flag, set next to the South Carolina State Capitol. Members of the public require the Republican governor Nikki Haley to remove the flag that many traditionally associated with racism. Such appeals were heard with great force after the killing of nine black Americans in the Church of Charleston. The killer, 21-year-old Dylan Rufus shot parishioners motivated by racial hatred. According to media reports, the number of his car was decorated with the flag of the confederation.

Protesters angered that the flag was not lowered after the tragedy. However, as noted by The Washington Post, in accordance with the law of 2000, it can be lifted or lowered only by a vote of the General Assembly of the State. According to this law, the desecration of the flag - a tribute to the southerners, who died during the Civil War - is a crime. At the same time, to reduce the level of public outrage, the flag was removed from the dome of the Capitol and hoisted on the flagpole near the war memorial.

US President Barack Obama is against demonstration Confederate flag, saying that it had a place in the museum, and not on the flagpole. In turn, an influential Republican Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham opposed the removal of the flag as it is a part of American history.

A request to remove the flag from the flagpole in South Carolina joined the Republican and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Republican Senator John McCain has changed his attitude to the flag twice, speaking directly opposed positions. In 2000 he called the flag "a symbol of racism," and then began to consider "a symbol of national heritage."

Not so long ago with a resonant decision regarding the Confederate flag image on the license plate of the car was made by the US Supreme Court. Having considered the case group from Texas activists who demanded from the US government to recognize their right to use the image of the flag on the license plate in memory of the soldiers who fought on the side of the Confederates, it sided with the Texas government, arguing that non - property state, and they should not be held "ideological content".
