Freud’s Theory of the Pleasure Principle

In psychoanalysis, Freud defines the principle of pleasure as the instinctual seeking of pleasure and avoiding pain with the aim to satisfy biological and psychological needs. The pleasure principle is the driving force guiding id.

Freud makes a contrast between the pleasure principle and the reality principle. The reality principle refers to the ability of a person to postpone the gratification of a desire when its immediate satisfaction is impossible due to circumstances. When a child is still little, his behavior is controlled by id. It is the only driving force the child obeys, that is why he wants immediate satisfaction of a desire. Young children want to satisfy their hunger and thirst no matter what the circumstances are like.

Growing up, people learn to withstand the pain of postponed gratification when reality requires it. Freud believed that ego becomes reasonable and is no longer governed by the pleasure principle. At older age ego obeys reality principle. This principle also seeks for the desire to be satisfied, but pleasure is received taking reality into account.

According to Freud, little children strive to satisfy their biological needs as soon as they arise, and they do not care whether their behavior is acceptable at a certain situation or not. Of course, grown up people also feel the influence of id, but they have learnt to control it. Sexual desires is the sphere where id vividly shows in the lives of adult people. Of course, if a person is mentally healthy, he or she can fully control his desires and assess if the situation allows expressing them.

When a child reaches the age of six or seven years, one is usually able to develop socially acceptable behavior as to the realization of his desires. He is not likely to grab a glass of water from somebody’s hands any more, for instance, but he will ask for the permission to drink some water.

Psychologists have noticed that many people do not allow themselves to fulfill the desires of their id in the right way. Due to the strict upbringing, the principle of pleasure is pushed to the back of our conscience and we often feel embarrassed to satisfy our desires even if it is perfectly socially acceptable. Specialists use certain techniques to help a person reconnect with “an inner child” in them. It is important to understand that id is the part of our conscience we should not be ashamed of. It is normal to have desires and to satisfy our pleasures at the right place and time, and by appropriate means.
