Incompetence in A Doll's House and Trifles

A Doll's House is a play by Henrik Ibsen. For the first time, its premiere took place in 1879. Trifles is a play written by Susan Glaspell. It was performed in 1916.

One main similarity between these two plays is treating the women like they are incompetent. Often, the women are treated by men as pets or prizes. In A Doll’s House, Torvald calls Nora a singing bird a little squirrel. His attitude toward her is similar to how other people treat their pets. The woman in this play is not given respect as a human being. In another play, Trifles, Mr. Wright does not even notice his wife, unless he needs to figure out something about cleaning, cooking, and marital relations. The husbands are boring and cold people. They act sexist towards their wives.

Men act as the women should not know what is really happening. For instance, in Trifles Mrs. Hale and the sheriff’s wife find out the real reason for the murder, but they decide to hide it. They do this in order to prove that they can figure things out without the men’s help. The men who lead the investigation often make fun of the women because they worry about the trifles, but women just try to hide the things that they have figured out.

In A Doll’s House, Torvald uses different ways to show his wife that he does not expect her to be able to do simple everyday things. Their maids do the household chores as well as take care of the children. On the mailbox, he put a lock so that he can be the only person to receive the mail.

The women in both plays are treated as though they are helpless. They are often treated as pets. In both stories, the women act pretending to appreciate being treated like this. They pretend that they are glad that the men protect and help them. At the same time, the women are really unhappy because they feel that they should take care of themselves.

This unhappiness drives both women to extreme measures. A Doll’s House clearly shows its critical attitude toward marriage norms. Ibsen was inspired by the idea that women cannot be themselves in modern society because it was an exclusive society for men with laws made by men. According to Michael Meyer, the play is also about of a person becoming him or herself.

Trifles is an example of feminist drama. The male characters are clearly prejudiced in believing that nothing important can be found in areas of the house where Minnie spent lots of time. The sheriff believes that kitchen things are not important, showing no respect toward the woman's life.
