The Establishment of the Electoral College

To find out more about important reasons to establish the Electoral College, people need to grab its historical context and the main problem that Founding Father wanted to solve this way. Basically, they faced an important subject of how to elect a president in the nation that consisted of 13 small and large states that had their own powers and rights and didn’t trust any central government. This nation also consisted of many people who were spread across countless miles and were barely connected by any communication and transport.

Besides, this nation believed that different political parties were evil and completely mischievous because of the influence of well-known political thinkers from the UK. These people also felt that gentlemen couldn’t campaign for any public office. All the above-mentioned aspects made it almost impossible to elect a president without national campaigns, political parties, and upsetting the right balance between the Congress and presidency on one hand, and between the federal government and states on the other.

When it comes to the origins of the Electoral College, there were a few possible methods considered to select a president. First, people suggested that the Congress had to make this choice, but this idea was rejected because many participants thought that it would be too divisive. Other people felt that this procedure would invite some political bargaining and other major problems, such as corruption and interference from unwanted foreign powers. There were people who felt that this kind of arrangement could ruin the balance of power between both executive and legislate branches of the federal government.

Another important idea was to force state legislatures to choose a president, but it was also rejected because of the fear that presidents would be beholden to such legislatures and might allow them to erode federal authorities and undermine the entire idea of federations. People also suggested electing a president through direct popular voting, but it was rejected because many of them feared that the wrong choice would be made in the end. Finally, the Electoral College was proposed, and this idea was winning. Its basic function in electing a president was to let the most famous and reputable people from each state to choose a president based on their knowledge and experience.
