Character Analysis Essay of Slaughterhouse Five

Slaughterhouse Five is an autobiographical novel by Kurt Vonnegut about the bombing of Dresden during World War II.

The Second World War is the central event in the history of the 20th century. One of the most famous novels by Kurt Vonnegut, a member of the World War Two, Slaughterhouse Five, is dedicated to this historical event.

The book opens with the story of the author about himself and his postwar prosperous life. This story takes a short first chapter and anticipates the main narrative. Vonnegut writes how he was preparing to write his book about the war and the bombing of Dresden. The end of this chapter is very important for an understanding of the novel concept in general, and the author’s attitude to the events described.

This is followed by the main narrative in which the author himself appears only two or three times as an episodic character. The main character is Billy Pilgrim, which as a result of the shock caused by the war, begins to travel through time, and after the crash, experienced in peacetime, starts to visit a distant planet Tralfamadore. This state of the character can be rationally motivated by the disorder of his mind and the influence of excessive reading of science fiction novels. It can be taken as a conditional and fantastic reality. Most likely, however, it is both, and even a philosophical allegory.

Since Billy is transferred from one period of his life to the other, the action takes place in several layers of time. Individual pieces of non-equal reality and tralfamadore episodes are mounted together and shed light at each other. The reader cannot help but compare America of the mid-sixties with its shame – Vietnam, Dresden catastrophe and anti-utopian Tralfamadore with its wise, happy, and intelligent inhabitants.

Billy Pilgrim is a hero preacher, passionately trying to convey to people his vision of war as a massacre. Killed during a speech, he resurrected in one of the moments of wanderings in his life. This is a character with the childish consciousness. Only childishly foolish people, according to Vonnegut, can be drawn into the war. The subtitle of the novel The Children’s Crusade should, according to the author, remind the reader about the real event in 1213, when under the guise of a campaign in Palestine children of France and Germany were gathered in order to be sold into slavery. Crusade of Pilgrim against the massacre while his son becomes a hero of the Vietnam War, makes him similar to Don Quixote. Billy who hot in the war as an assistant chaplain, while not being a faithful Catholic, makes us think about the importance of religion in human life.
