Vehicles of Transcendence from the Mundane in The Ballad of the Sad Café

Living in a backwater town, it is important to have something to break the ordinary. All days seem to be the same. If something happens, all people start talking about it.

Things are pretty the same in the story The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers. For the first time, it was published in 1951.

The first vehicle of transcendence in the story is the hunchback, cousin Lymon. He arrives in the town in the middle of the night and claims to be kin to Miss Amelia Evans. This woman is the main character of the story. She is the strong character of both mind and body.

Miss Amelia is seen by other people as a calculating woman who always has a reason for her actions. The people from the town are surprised to find out that she decides to take the stranger into her home. This causes rumors that Miss Amelia has on purpose to get the things that the hunchback had in his suitcase. Eventually, eight men come to her store. They sit outside waiting for something interesting to happen.

Although people know that all the stories circulating around the town may be lies, they are interested because there is nothing more intriguing happening in the town.

When men entered the store, they saw that the hunchback is alive and everything is fine with him. Miss Amelia treats the men with liquor and crackers, which shocks them because they have never seen her showing hospitality. This is the beginning of the café. Miss Amelia along with the hunchback, Cousin Lymon, creates a new tradition for the town. The people start to gather inside at the café on Sunday evenings.

The café is the place for people to gather together and gossip. Another vehicle of transcendence is the use of alcohol. People come to café and drink alcoholic drinks hour by hour. In this place, people could easily become friends, even for one day only when they hang out together in the same café.

The townspeople are surprised to find out that Miss Amelia has fallen in love with Cousin Lymon. People tend to relate it to her ten-day marriage. Miss Amelia was married to Marvin Macy, who had been known for a cruel character before meeting and falling in love with the woman. He changed and became good-natured but just for some time before he was rejected.

He committed a range of felonies and was caught and locked up in the state penitentiary. When he returns, he wants to revenge his lover and uses Cousin Lymon for this purpose. Eventually, both men ransack the café, steal money, and disappear.
