When the French reached Moscow, a city was empty of people, and everywhere there were fires. Napoleon was forced to leave the city, and on the way back tens of thousands of its soldiers died from the terrible cold of the Russian winter.

The subsequent defeat of Napoleon's army coalition forces major European powers, led to the fact that in March 1814 the Russian, Prussian and Austrian troops entered Paris.

Napoleon was forced to abdicate, and the king of France became Louis XVIII, brother of the executed Louis XVI. Even while in exile on the Italian island of Elba, Napoleon made a last desperate attempt to regain his power.

Leaving the island, he came to Paris and began to gather his army, but, as it turned out, it only to be subjected to its last defeat in the village of Waterloo, 18 June 1815.
