Childhood in Lord of the Flies

William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is about children. But is it really about children in terms of the usual understanding of a childish theme? Frantic hunter Jack, inexorable Ralph, and cruel Roger – all of them play adult games, in which the price of victory is their own life.

The novel is of fantastic nature, in which the author embodied the dream of every teenager – to be an absolute owner of some space and without the intervention of adults build their own way of being. The dynamic of the plot, which with the increasing confrontation between the two central characters (Ralph and Jack), is gaining more strength.

William Golding explores the nature of a child by placing decent English boys in extreme circumstances. We can try and follow the process of understanding the childhood in different cultural epochs. If in the Middle Ages, a child capable to be without a nurse was seen as a small adult, scientists and artists of the Modern Era recognized autonomy for the childhood that resulted in the appearance of the symbolic images of childhood in the culture, specifically, in the literature and public mind.

The plot of the novel is simple. The plane, which was carrying children out of somewhere to no one knows where crashed. All children were saved, but all the adults died. How did this happen? The author does not explain this. Number of children is unknown, at first they couldn’t count themselves and then they did not want to. The age of children is from about five to about thirteen, all children are boys. There are enough fruits on the island that grow right on trees, so starvation is not a threat for children in the near future. The island is inhabited by wild pigs, which needs to be caught. Two boys have knives, one has glasses, with which you can make a fire.

Being alone in an enclosed space, children begin to fly into a rage, and the hunt for wild boars turns into hunt for each other.

Later unlimited freedom relegates them to the primitive state of primitive savages. Only Ralph and Piggy are the most rational of all, constantly hoping that they will be saved. And salvation comes to them, but in what form? The final scene of the novel is full of bitter irony, and irony is accumulated from the beginning of the narrative.

The irony is in the interpretation of such a valuable human quality as rationalism. One of the representatives of rationalism in the novel is a fat boy with a funny and very meaningful nickname Piggy. The destruction of the shell parallel to the death of Piggy symbolizes the destruction of the reasonableness of the island.
