The Incredible Love Story in “Pride and Prejudice”

The primary love story described in the novel “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen is the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. They are the main characters of the novel, and their love story develops as the plot unfolds.

Elizabeth, the second of five sisters, is beautiful and smart. She is fun to be around, very feminine and has an excellent sense of humor. Perhaps, the only disadvantage of hers is the tendency to judge her acquaintances too fast and with the lack of facts supporting her opinion.

It is not a surprise that the noble gentleman Mr. Darcy falls in love with brilliant Elizabeth. At first, he fights his own feelings and does not want to admit them. Elizabeth comes from a lower layer of society than Mr. Darcy, and he knows her mother as a silly woman behaving in an absurd way. His feeling of pride prevents him from exposing his love easily. He only dares to express it when he cannot hide his feelings any more, and he does it in a rather arrogant way. He admits his feelings to Elizabeth’s face and proposes her to become his wife. However, he also tells her about his hesitation and his sincere opinion about her family. This truth insults Elizabeth, and she refuses to accept his proposal.

As the novel goes on, Elizabeth has a chance to change her opinion about Mr. Darcy. He reveals the best traits of his character when he helps Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia, to regain her honor after she thoughtlessly runs off with the officer George Wickham. He makes a deal with Wickham and forces him to marry Lydia, but wants to stay anonymous and does not want to mention his deed to anyone. Eventually Elizabeth also finds out that officer Wickham who she sympathized with was really a liar. He tried to deceive Mr. Darcy’s younger sister and talk her into escaping with him, just like he did with Lydia. When truth becomes known to her, Elizabeth’s feelings for Mr. Darcy grow even deeper and she starts feeling real love for him.

The couple shows the example of overcoming the obstacles, such as deception, the opinion of the society, time and separation. Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy overcome their pride and prejudice at the end of the novel, and they ultimately become a happily married couple. The ending of the novel makes the hearts of readers happy when Elizabeth admits her feelings for Mr. Darcy and accepts his proposal. Prejudice is defeated and love can flow freely between the hearts of the young people.
