Expectations of Parents from Their Children

In the meetings with parents psychologists always concern about the role of parental expectations for the child. Of all the types of suppression particular importance in this system is played by expectations.

There are various expectations of parents from their children: the child should be obedient; he or she must study hard; they should be involved in further education (learning languages, doing sports, having hobbies, etc.); they should help around the house, keep the room tidy; they must be responsible and independent; they should not smoke, drink alcohol, take drugs; they should not spend a lot of time online in social networks or playing computer games. This list in some cases can reach 80 or more points. But usually it includes diametrically opposite characteristics expected from the behavior of the child.

Can you imagine what a burden it is for the child to live with so many expectations? Many of children and then adults develop high level of anxiety, because such a person always scans their behavior by checking whether it matches somebody’s expectations.

Expectations of parents towards their children directly lead to what is called a learned social helplessness. Acquired or learned helplessness is the human condition, when a person does not attempt to improve their status, although there is such a possibility. Helplessness is a decline from action as a result of unsuccessful attempts, which did not lead to the desired result.

Why do expectations of parents lead to helplessness of children? They interrupt the activity of a child and do not give the opportunity to act differently. A child is deprived of the right to choose how to act. The other side of expectations is a lack of parental faith in the success of the child. Social helplessness may have several manifestations: boredom, laziness, apathy, and depression.

The other consequence of social helplessness is the formation and development of chemical and non-chemical addictions. It is important to show that there is a direct relationship between how parents build a relationship with the child and how this is reflected on the spiritual, mental and physical health of a child.

Also social helplessness can lead to antisocial behavior. For some reason it is considered that punishment should interrupt this chain of consequences. By punishing the child, parents expect from different behavior from them in future. But in fact, punishment only contributes to further deterioration of relations.
