As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner Summary

Faulkner as always is great, and the book is good, but disgusting. There are vile characters, disgusting acts, and vile thoughts.

Sixteen persons tell sixteen diverse opinions, sixteen views of one event, sixteen worlds. Faulkner is a Master to uncover the truth inside. His heroes talk about the same, but each one sees his own truth. And the truth is that all these sixteen opinions and is truth, and reality itself in his books is subjective.

Here we see not only miserable, but most stupid, selfish and "go" family with whom we've ever acquainted. Addie Bundren dies. It is the death of a wife and mother. This is only the beginning, but here it becomes unbearably creepy son sawing planks for the coffin right in front of the window of a dying mother, defiantly showing her each of them. Addie Bundren is out, and everyone is trying to cope with the impending loss in their own way, each of them puts up as he pleases: Cash - this is his coffin, Julia pulls away and behaves aggressively, father of the family Anse constantly complains and everyone is not satisfied, and the youngest Bundren - Vardaman - turns the mother into a fish.

Bundren is the personification of how people are trying to issue for the love and sacrifice that is only self-interest. The purpose of travel to Jefferson is Addie funeral. But this is only a cover. Making way through the thoughts of heroes more and more deeply, the reader becomes more and more clear that, under the guise of good intentions and a desire to express respect for the mother by making her last will, each one of Bundren has its own hidden sophisticated goal to get to Jefferson. That is why they cannot bury the stinking corpse before: for Dew Dell a trip to the city can be a chance to have an abortion, Anse cannot wait to make his teeth, and a favorite Addie’s son - Jewel - just wants to delay the funeral, because he do not want to let his mother. Only Darl understands that only tribute to the mother is to bury her quickly, but it would mean that the family will have to give up a trip to the city and the achievement of its objectives.

Way before Jefferson became unbearably long, and that it brings out the worst in the family of Bundren that with each new chapter is increasingly becoming the only way to crazy existence. Darl - the central character of the novel. As the only normal among madmen, he will feel how unfair madness will go against him. This character Faulkner shows how normality and clarity of mind is forced to be perverted in the absurd environment.
