The Tropical Rainforest Deforestation and Livelihood

At the time of the arrival of Europeans, two-thirds of the continental part of Central America was covered with tropical forests. Deforestation and the destruction of this valuable natural resource for the purpose of clearing the site for construction of settlements, as well as the use of other economic opportunities began in the XVI century, during the Spanish colonial era. Since then, the harmful practice has never stopped. Moreover, over the past decade the rate of deforestation of tropical forests in Central America have increased, which cannot but cause concern. Since 1950 almost 85% of all forests in the region were killed. Currently, it disappears annually about 3 million acres of Central American and Mexican forests. El Salvador has already lost 99% of its forests, and most of the other six republics will soon reach the same result. Causes of tropical deforestation are associated with constant economic and demographic problems of developing countries.

In Central America, the main reason was the need for clearing land for grazing due to the fact that many countries in the region have become producers and exporters of meat. Since tropical soils are poor in nutrients, cleared from the forest area can be used as pasture, at best, only for a few years. After that, they leave this land. The result of terrible devastation of the landscape can be seen in many countries. Without the protection, the forest soil erosion and flooding problems are rapidly becoming the area. Another reason for the reduction of forests is intense logging. The third factor that contributes to cutting is associated with a population explosion in the region. Such interference makes it impossible to recover the forest. Although deforestation produces depressing effect, ranchers, farmers and loggers do not see this danger. On the contrary, they believe it gives them even shorter, but all the same benefits.

If we do not take immediate measures to protect tropical forests, by the middle of this century the world's resources will be reduced to two endangered spots on the map.

Tropical forests are an extremely important part of our natural world. Although these forests occupy only 3% of the total land area there is concentrated three quarters of all species of animals and plants of the planet. Because tropical forests are the source of countless medical, food and industrial products, in the case of the disappearance of many unknown species of plants also will be lost to mankind.
