Stern Punishment of Spanking

Most likely, no nuance in the educational process of the child causes as many problems as the child’s punishment. Some think that it is unacceptable to punish children, but others believe that punishing children with spanking is something that can be taken for granted and doesn’t need to be discussed. So who is right? Should we punish the child, or still abstain from retaliatory measures?

We can say for sure that child’s punishment is extremely meticulous action that requires careful consideration and weighing. Thoughtless punishment does not only eliminate the desired effect, but also can lead to unpredictable consequences, like complete disobedience of the child and even running away from home.

A study conducted in 2012 in the US found that half of women and about a third of men think that they wouldn’t mind sometimes to use spanking. Some suggest that parental warmth and love can mitigate the negative effects of corporal punishment. However, this is not so.

Scientists have found out that you should not spank your child, as this has a negative effect on their brain. It has not only psychological, but also physiological consequences.

In 2009, the researchers came to the conclusion that severe corporal punishment affects the brain development of children. They meant that severe corporal punishment is at least one spanking per month for three years, using a belt or other materials at hand.

Children who are regularly exposed to such punishment had less gray matter in areas of the brain associated with depression, drug addiction, and other mental disorders. Also there is an observed relationship between the amount of gray matter in these areas and IQ of the child.

A study in 2010 showed that corporal punishment of a three-year-old child at least 2 times per month increases the level of aggression at the age of five. If spanking comes from the mother, there is a risk of reduced cognitive abilities. At the same time spanking affects children the most at the age from 5 to 9.

Scientists say that the bigger amount of gray matter in the brain, the greater the ability to assess the consequences of their actions. Corporal punishment of a child for the lack of self-control deprives them of the opportunity to improve their behavior. Children receive control from the outside, but the inside position cannot be formed.

Professor Elizabeth Gershoff, who has been studying corporal punishment for 15 years, said that no study has shown that spanking brings positive effect. Most of us stop when we are beaten, but it is unlikely to teach us something.

Most likely, no nuance in the educational process of the child causes as many problems as the child’s punishment. Some think that it is unacceptable to punish children, but others believe that punishing children with spanking is something that can be taken for granted and doesn’t need to be discussed.
