It was the time of great changes during the industrial revolution. It was the time of drastic change and transformation from handmade items and handmade tools to mass produced goods and machine manufacture. These changes were the real help for life, but also they hindered it. This period is characterized by the pollution of the atmosphere, declined working conditions, increasing the number of working children and women. Everything was changed during this period, including literature, arts, government, architecture and music. Of course, the humans’ attitude on the everyday life was also changed.
The economy of England was based in its cottage industry before the first industrial revolution. Almost of workers bought the raw materials from the merchants, took it back to their cottages and produced the different goods at their home. As the rule, it was managed and owned by one or few persons who were so close to the workers. There was the relationship between worker and boss, which was destroyed and demolished by capitalism. Such industry was so efficient, but the productivity of the workers was lower, and the costs of the items were higher. So the conception was in the next that as longer the one person manufactures the product, as higher the price becomes. Obviously, such goods were expensive and exclusive, and only the wealthy people could allow buying it.
So the life was so changed during the period which is called “industrial revolution”. People lived in a germ infested, crowded and stayed in unhealthful conditions. Unfortunately, the places of their work often looked and were the same, not equipped and not clean. Women and children spent too much time laboring; they worked for long hours, had minimum breaks and got so little pay. The Parliament of Great Britain stepped in, controlled and even limited children’s labor. It was also the method of the great changes. Wealthy capitalists and just ordinary people wanted the government of their country to stay out of its issues, which they called as “laissez-faire system”. Many people were among the oppositionists of this system, they said that the capitalists would gain so much power and people may be left mistreated. Few years have been passed and the laissez-faire system was disregarded.
Considering all the pieces of information which we know about the poor people who lived during the revolution, it is important to say that it was so difficult time for all people but especially, for children.
