Contrasting Attributes in The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is one of the most famous stories written by Fitzgerald, and it describes many interesting and contrasting elements. For example, when it comes to such important characters as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carroway, they are viewed just like an apple and an orange. It’s true that they have their unique similarities, but they are characterized by specific contrasting attributes. That’s why readers need to make their comparison to find out more about the differences and similarities of these men.

Basically, they both are men of ambition because they moved away and tried to find their own happiness because they really want it. They are not like some people who are terrified of changes and are afraid to pursue their ideas and dreams. It’s hard to say if Jay Gatsby is a man of judgement or not because it’s not stated in the text. When analyzing the character of Nick, he is a hypocrite man who is not quite trustworthy because he claims that he never judges people, but he does according to the fact that he is the narrator of this story.

Besides, Nick is a man who has only one perspective view, while Jay has another, and it’s clear that he is more ambitious then Nick. The main reason is that the entire life cycle of Jay is about reaching Daisy, and the entire purpose of his life is to make her come back. When it comes to Tom and Gatsby, they are also contrasted in this famous book, and they’re the same in terms of their values, but their lifestyles differ considerably. They both are adulterers because Jay wants Daisy who is married and Tom is cheating on her.

In contrast, Rom is a big a strong man, while Gatsby is small and not as well built. They both are rich men and they think that money can buy everything they want. Another common characteristic is that both men think that money can be used to impress everyone. Jay uses his money to party and make Daisy come, so he definitely uses his funds to get what he wants. Tom does the same thing because he uses money and his power to get what he wants too.

Another important detail is that Jay wants to be considered an intellectual man by telling people that he graduated from Oxford and having a huge library of different books. Tom is an athletic man who is smart and knows that because he graduated from Yale. So, both men have many things in common, but they still can be contrasted in different terms.
