Napoleon Bonaparte’s Military Tactics

As a military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte was a man of details, accurate and methodical. To achieve victory in the wars he led, he used quick and intense attacks based on extreme maneuverability of his troops. He also made sure that his staff had superior morale and tried to make his army as big as possible.

Napoleon studied the strategies of past generals and used their ideas, expanding them and correcting their mistakes. Napoleon’s ideas and strategies on warfare didn’t die with him. His tactics are still studied today because of his determination and experience on the battlefield. Not many commanders were involved in as many different battles as him. The battles could vary drastically in terms of weather, landscape and enemies.

Napoleon showed surprising invincibility on the battlefield from 1796 to 1809. This led him to not only gain victories militarily but also politically. He started his career as an officer of a low rank and eventually rose to be Emperor of France. His self-confidence and quick mind caused France to be one of the greatest empires in Europe.

Napoleon defeated the armies of his enemies in battles due to the different kind of thinking that left his opponents broken. Simply speaking, Napoleon’s strategies involved excellent manoeuvres, attacks from flanks and the isolation of the enemy. When his army faced superior number of enemies, he divided the army of the enemy and defeated each section individually. He deployed his reserves at the right time and place. Facing inferior quantity of enemies, he smashed into the opponent’s flank and drew his attention away. The enemies were taken by surprise, while the main division swept across their lines of communication.

Attentive planning was the significant component of his success. Napoleon said that he purposefully exaggerated all the dangers and troubles he might encounter before the battle. He always had one goal – to defeat his enemy, and believed that the rest of the issues could be solved easily. He always strived to keep the enemy alarmed. He took the initiative and determined the location of the battle. If he saw the enemy’s army was larger than his one, he threw all of his troops at one critical point to break the lines of the enemy. He also frequently attempted to outflank the enemy and attack their connecting lines, supplies and leaders. This caused the enemy’s panic and chaos in their lines. Napoleon preferred to act quickly, aggressively and massively.
