The Concept of Leadership

Leadership is a skill encompassing the ability of an organization or individual to lead or guide other organizations, individuals, teams, or entire. Approaches to leadership differ in Eastern and Western countries.

According to US academic environments, leadership is a process of influence in which a person can enlist the support and aid of others in order to accomplish one’s task.

Studies of leadership have developed theories involving traits, function, situational interaction, behavior, vision and values, power, charisma, and intelligence, among others.

Theorists look at leadership as a set of behaviors, determining the behavior of successful leaders and identifying broad leadership styles. According to David McClelland, leadership is a combination of a strong personality and a well-developed positive ego. In order to be a good leader, it is important to be self-confident and have a high self-esteem.

In 1939, Ronald Lipitt, Kurt Lewin, and Ralph White developed the work on the influence of leadership performance and styles. The researchers evaluated the behavior of groups of eleven-year-old boys under different work climates. Three basic leadership styles have been determined, including democratic, authoritarian, and laissez-faire.

People are not born good leaders; they can become them. In order to become an effective leader, it is important to improve skills and knowledge through education, self-study, training, and experience.

A leader's skills and knowledge can be enhanced by his or hers attributes or traits, for instance, values, beliefs, ethics, and character. Knowledge and skills contribute to the process of leadership. The other attributes allow the leader to possess certain characteristics that make him or her unique. For instance, a leader might have learned some skills in counseling others, but a person with empathy will make a better counselor.

Management and leadership have lots of in common, for instance, working with people and accomplishing the goals of the company, but there is also a significant difference between them. The main function of management is to produce order and consistency through processes like planning, organizing, staffing, budgeting, and problem solving. The main function of leadership is to produce movement and adaptive or constructive change through processes like establishing direction through motivating, aligning, visioning, and inspiring people.
