Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician, states person, diplomat and writer, who became the First and incumbent State Counsellor and Leader of the National League for Democracy. She also became the first woman, who served as the Minister of the President's Office, the Minister of Electric Power and Energy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and the Minister of Education and from 2012 to 2016 was a Pyithu Hluttaw MP for Kampu Township.
Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Yangon, Myanmar, 1945. This country was traditionally well-known as Burma. She is the youngest daughter of Aung San and Khin Kyi. Her father, Aung San, who was formerly actual British Burma prime minister, was killed in 1947. Her mother was an ambassador to India in 1960. After she finished high school in India, Aung San Suu Kyi studied abroad at the University of Delhi and The University of Oxford. The first one she finished in 1964 and the second in 1968. After that, Aung San Suu Kyi worked at the United Nations for three years. In 1972 she married Michael Aris and brought into this world two children – Alexander and Kim. The family lived the 1970s and 1980s in England, the United States and India.
After years she spent abroad she came back home and decided to protest against the brutal dictator – U Ne Win. In addition, she organised a pacific movement, to achieve human rights and democracy. However, 1989 became a year of her arrest and she had to spend fifteen of the next twenty one years in custody. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi got the Nobel Prize for Peace for her current efforts. This also helped her to achieve freedom in November 2010. From this time and till 2015 she held a seat in the parliament for the National League for Democracy.
That same November, the National League for Democracy became a winner of a landslide victory, which gave them a majority control of parliament. This allowed them to choose the next president of this country. Htin Kyaw was selected for this position and Aung San Suu Kyi became a the state counsellor. This position is above the presidency and it allows her to guide the country's affairs. Except the mentioned rewards, she also got the Rafto Prize in 1990, the International Simon Bolivar Prize in 1992 and the Jawaharlal Nehru Award in 1993. In 2008, Suu Kyi achived the Congressional Gold Medal and became the first person in American history, who got it being in prison.
