Dwight D Eisenhower: Biography

Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas. In 1915 he graduated from the Military Academy at West Point and at the same time met with Mamie Dowd. They married in 1916.

After the US took part into the World War I in 1917, Eisenhower was preparing volunteers for the front. In the 1920s, he served in the Panama Canal Zone, attended the command staff school, he was a member of the commission on war memorial in Paris. In subsequent years, Dwight served as assistant chief of staff of the army of General MacArthur, and then served in the Philippines.

During World War II, Eisenhower held senior positions in the Department of Military and Strategic Planning of the General Staff of the Army. After the Teheran Conference, a second front was opened, and Eisenhower was appointed as a commander of Allied forces in Europe. It was he who led the major offensive of allies - the invasion of France, began landing in Normandy in June 1944.

After the war, Eisenhower, at the head of the American occupation forces in Germany, maintained friendly relations with Marshal Zhukov, and believed in the possibility of cooperation between the USSR and the USA. However, by the end of his military career, he became a supporter of the "cold war."

After retiring from the army in 1948, Eisenhower was elected as Rector of Columbia University. Almost without interfering in academic affairs, he spent a lot of time writing an autobiographical book about the war.

In 1952, Eisenhower finally left military service, after which began a campaign for the nomination for the presidency. Becoming a US president in January 1953, he was again re-elected to that post in 1956. Among the positive moments in his reign should be noted the cessation of the Korean War and the resumption of US-Soviet summits, even though he was a supporter of the continuation of the Cold War and the arms race. In the field of domestic policy, the government has sought to balance the budget, cut taxes and restore some functions to the states the federal government, and the main objective of economic development was free competition. However, the social and political situation of the country continued to dictate the increase in federal spending.
