Plato's Social Policies Regarding the Soul and Self-Interest

There are lots of written works which concern the inner world of people and pay attention to the question of soul and self-interest. The book “Plato’s Republic” starts and ends with the discussions of justice. By the way, the main part of the book follows the dialect between the proper implementation of the justice, Socrates and the interlocutors on nature. The central element of this dialect is the question of is or not the justice the intrinsic good. But there is one more point of view, which suggests that it is simply good because there are some social externalities or consequences. For making the future arguments about the bad and good sides of justice on its own terms and consequences, Plato developed the certain model of justice in the soul, the certain model of justice in the city, and one of them depends on its former. Plato also dedicates the considerable amount of the time for identifying very specifically the things that would make the city be more harmonious and also those ones which would jeopardize the created harmony because the author defines the justice in the city as the unity and harmony.

He proves that this is because the harmonious city with the well-functioning and coherent body politic existed thanks to nature. But Plato also wrote that the noble social principles aimed because of the shaping the souls of all the citizens of the certain city, and these principles are necessary and also responsible аoк affecting the justice of the harmony.

Moreover, it seems to be the city of Plato is so harmonious and thereby just so simply. The reason for this is political pragmatism that results from the aristocracy and regime, that are structured in such a way that the leverages the self-interest of the people who are from the different classes of society. Also, it ensures that individuals from the every this class have the freedom for practicing the craft for which they are suited most of all.

In order to make the analyses of the logic of Plato regarding the justice in his aristocracy, the first task for readers is to separate the noble social principles which are aimed at shaping the soul of citizens from the different elements of political organization which are not meant to do so. In addition, it may help with this endeavor to consider and understand these two distinct roles that are adopted by Plato in planning the various aspects of his aristocracy.
