Comparing Vonnegut and Wren

The glory, horror, morbidity of the warfare and chivalry are depicted in the written works of the lots of great authors. In the novels Beau Geste and Slaughterhouse Five so different ideals of war and undeniable consequences of the military service are depicted.

The most obvious and foremost difference is the way with the help of which both authors portray the main characters from their novels. Billy Pilgrim, who is the character from the novel of Vonnegut, defies any conventional mold of the hero of the wartime. Pilgrim’s intentions are not only to fight, but also to serve the spiritual and moral needs of the soldiers from the army. This character finds himself so far away from the squadron, and he aimlessly wandered in the German woods being with the rest of American soldiers. Among these soldiers Roland Weary was. He slightly guns quixotic and happy in this visions of the heroes from the war. That is why he often castigated Pilgrim for his lack of zeal concerning the survival effort. After the reading of the whole novel, the reader may be more inclined to have sympathy toward Pilgrim than consider him to be the noble soldier.

IN addition, John Geste is the main character from the novel written by Wren. From the one hand, John is a dashing young gentleman from England with lots of laudable traits. John Geste is so handsome, well-bred, intelligent and virile man. Reading the novel, readers can notice that John often is faced with the unrealistic and unachieved goals. For example, among his aims were such ones as the fighting off the bands of Arabs by his own and the holding down the fort solo. Obviously, the readers can notice easily that Wren’s ideal of the war hero is always victorious in the face of peril.

Furthermore, the reasons and motives are of the different nature behind the two wars and battles being found in the respective books. The character from the novel of Vonnegut is fairly blatant for the World War II. Writing the novel, the author, Vonnegut, often makes mentions, remaining the bombings of Dresden by the American army. Due to these bombings about the one hundred thousand of innocent residents of Germany were slain. Also, the author underlines the physical and psychological damage that Pilgrim suffers. Billy Pilgrim suffers from both physical and psychological damage, and this fact illustrated the point of view of the author. It means that such term as war is nothing short of bloody, useless and in general physically exhausting.
