The life of Sylvia Plath, great poet and novelist

Sylvia Plath was an American novelist, poet and short story writer. She is the most famous for her poetry collections “Ariel ” and “ The Colossus ”and also for semi- autobiographical novel “ The Bell Jar ”. Few the most important facts about Plath. This great writer was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1932. She studied at Newnham College and Smith college. She got married in 1956 to poet Ted Hughes. They broke up in September 1962. They had two children, Nicholas and Frieda. The sources state that Sylvia Plath was in depression most part of her adult life and in the end she committed suicide in 1963. She won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for here work “The Collected Poems” in 1982.

Early life of the writer

She was interested in writing from early age and her journal became her first attempt to write. When she was eight-years-old, she published her first poem. In a few next years, she published her poems in different magazines. Plath was a talented poet, but also a trouble one, who is known for her confessional style of writing. All these works that she published, helped her win a scholarship in Smith College in 1950. Being a student, Sylvia spent time in New York working as a guest editor for Mademoiselle magazine, in summer 1953. Later after this, she tried to commit suicide by taking a big dose of sleeping pills. She was saved and after that she got a professional treatment in a mental health facility. In 1955 she returned to Smith College and got a degree.

Close relationships and Poetry

Studying at Newnham college she met Ted Hughes, the poet, who later, in 1956 became her husband. Their relationship was very emotional and stormy. In 1957, she went in Massachusetts where she studied with poet Robert Lowell and also met one of the fellow poets Ann Sexton. In 1960, she published her first and the most famous collection of poetry “The Colossus”. The same year she gave birth to Freida, her first child. Two years later, the second child Nicholas was born in the family. Unfortunately, the couple decided to break up.

Death of Sylvia Plath

In 1962, after her husband left her for another woman, Sylvia fell into a depression. Being in this emotional struggling, she wrote her famous novel “The Bell Jar” in 1963. It was based on her own life path and deals with mental background of one young woman. She also wrote a few poems that finished her collection named “Ariel”. On February 11, 1963 Sylvia Plath decided to end her life and committed suicide.
