The Battle of the Bulge in Ardennes, France

In the second half of 1944, Germany was in a critical situation. German leadership saw their last chance to avoid defeat to split the anti-Hitler coalition. And this can be achieved only through a serious success in the West, but not in the East.

When planning a counteroffensive, the German command chose the most vulnerable places in the Allied defense that was the slightly covered Ardennes sector of the front. The attack was to implement a new Army Group "B".

The German command pinned High hopes on the planned special commando operations behind enemy lines. It was also planned to throw paratroopers in the area on the north of Malmedy.

Command of the Wehrmacht has sought to raise the striking power of troops destined for the attack. Early in the morning of December 16, 1944, German troops launched an offensive in the Ardennes. On December 21 Army troops went on the offensive. As a result of the Allied command of urgent measures, the German forces were unable to develop the offensive on the town. They suffered heavy losses.

According to the chief of the personnel of Staff General Eisenhower, Allied losses in the Ardennes was 76 890 people, including 8607 killed, 47,139 wounded and 21,144 missing.

German losses in weapons and materiel were also very heavy. They were serious loss of allies, since they could not be filled.
