An Analysis of My Antonia by W. Cather

Willa Cather is American writer who gained fame and recognition for her novels about the life of the American Frontier on the Great Plains. Her most famous novels are O Pioneers!, My Antonia, and Song of the Lark.

Appeal to the poetics of the one of the most important novels, My Antonia, will allow tracing the genesis and features of the creative method of the writer and more accurately defining its place in literary history during the late 19th – early 20th centuries.

Artistic outlook of Cather forms features and ways of reflecting reality in that particular artistic form, which is determined by the concept of the genre. It is the analysis of the genre as a synthetic phenomenon helps to create a solid foundation for in-depth comprehension of the nature of the novel My Antonia. The analysis also makes it possible not only to trace the similarities of Cather’s artistic thinking characteristic of the early period of her work, but also identify new features, first of all, in the field of art forms, which show the evolution of her creative method. Therefore, there are two main genres and a narrative form in the studies, which determines the dialectical approach to literature as synthetic phenomenon.

The basis of the method of reflection of reality in a number of works by Cather, including the novel My Antonia, is the principle, which is particularly reminiscent of the aesthetic rule of Henry James that the only way to recreate the reality is the personal human experience, understood as the ability to guess the unseen with the seen things, comprehend the essence of things, and judge of the whole by parts.

The originality of the novel My Antonia in many ways is an attempt to introduce into the narrative two main characters: the narrator, a man of fine spiritual organization, who primarily speaks not of himself, but of an external object, reflects on the past and present, and the heroine who is for him the personification of the best virtues of the era of pioneering, a symbol of enduring beauty.

Subjectivity of the vision of the narrator in the novel My Antonia is emphasized by the author since the preface, where Cather introduces the narrator – Jim Burden, a childhood friend, who has kept romantic tendencies, due to which he was often made fun of. This work is often called by critics as a novel of memories, but at the same time it has the features of the American variant of the lyrical novel of education or novel-reflection, where there is a tendency to a decrease in the plot and dramatic values of the image of the narrator and the simultaneous increase of its ideological, emotional, and psychological role.
