Opinion Paper on Freud's Psychoanalytic Theories

Sigmund Freud has developed several psychoanalytic theories. Freud believed that the mind was responsible for both unconscious and conscious decisions, based on forces and drives. Unconscious desires make people act accordingly. There are three aspects of the mind, including id, ego, and superego that, according to Freud, create a person's personality. Freud considered people to be actors in the drama of their minds.

Freud believed that the id is the part of the unconscious that constantly looks for pleasure. He used this idea in order to give the explanations to certain people’s acts. Being a part of the mind, the id holds all of most primal and basic instincts. It is the unconscious and impulsive part of the mind. It is based on a desire to achieve satisfaction right away. Freud thought that the id controls the pleasure principle. That is why the id makes people looking for a way to find a pleasure without considering whether it is right or wrong.

The ego, according to Freud, is responsible for balance between pain and pleasure. Since it is impossible for all desires to be fulfilled and the ego knows it still keeps looking for satisfaction and pleasure. The ego does not distinguish the difference between wrong and right. It operates on the reality principle to satisfy the demands of the id.

The superego develops around age four-five years old. It incorporates the society’s morals, and it is responsible for controlling impulses of the mind. The superego is the conscience of the mind because it is able to distinguish what is right or wrong. Without the superego, people would act with aggression and other typical immoral behaviors. The superego is the consciousness of a personality. Freud believed that there are two separate categories of the superego, including the ideal self and the conscious. The ideal self includes images of how people have to behave according to societies ideals.

The conscious includes morals and ideals that exist within a society that prevent people from acting based on their internal desires.

According to my opinion, Freud’s theories are correct. It is possible that the unconscious mind is the answer to many people’s actions. People really tend to look for pleasure, but they also consider how safe it is for them. Different people may act differently in different situations. There are risk-takers who may be able to do more to get a pleasure than some other people.
