The Biography and Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne

Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, the state of Massachusetts. His ancestors were puritans. His early ancestor, William Hathorne, emigrated from Great Britain to America in 1630 and settled in Salem. There he gained the fame of a strict judge for his unmerciful verdicts. William’s son, John Hathorne, was the judge during the Salem Witch Trials in the 1690s. The writer decided to add another letter to his name because he did not want to be recognized as their family member.

Due to the help of his rich uncles, Nathaniel attended Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1825. There he got acquainted with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Franklin Pierce, who would become the president in the future. Hawthorne admitted that he was an irresponsible student and had little interest in studies.

After attending college Nathaniel returned home to stay for twelve years. During this time, he began to write purposefully and soon published several stories. This time was marked by the creation of the novels An Old Woman’s Tale”, My Kinsman, Major Molineux”, The Hollow of the Three Hills” and “Roger Malvin’s Burial”. In 1837 he wrote “Twice Told Tales”. His writing did not provide him with a good income, so he had to work for the Boston Custom House. His duties were to weigh and measure salt and coal.

The writer’s solitude ended when he met Sophia Peabody. She was a painter, illustrator, and transcendentalist. Due to his relationship with Sophia, Hawthorne got to know Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. He was not captivated by the ideas of transcendentalism, however living in the commune allowed him to save money for his upcoming marriage. The couple got married on July 9, 1842 and came to live in the town Concord, in the state of Massachusetts. They rented Old Manse, the owner of which was Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The romantic novel “The Scarlet Letter” was written when the family lived in Salem. When they moved from this puritanical society to the town of Lenox, the writer had a new burst of productivity. During this period of his life he wrote “The House of the Seven Gables”, “Tanglewood Tales” and “Blithedale Romance”.

From 1853 to 1857 the writer lived in England as an American Consul. His “Our Old Home” was written during his life there.

After ending his work in the United Kingdom and taking a trip to Italy, Hawthorne came up with “The Marble Faun”, which was the last of his novels.
