Essay on the Transformation of Hester in Scarlet Letter

Scarlet Letter is the first and most famous novel by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, which addresses the themes of sin, intolerance of society, feelings of guilt, and human dignity. Events in the novel are unfolded in New England of the 17th century. In the novel, the author reveals the appearance of his ancestors – the Puritans.

Hester Prynne is the main character of Scarlet Letter and the most complex image, which is difficult to decipher. The complexity of the image is in the fact that its internal development is ahead of the movement of the story. Destinies of Dimmesdale and Chillingworth can be echoed with some moments of the social life of the 19th century, but these characters themselves unconditionally belong to the 17th century. It is not the case with Hester Prynne. A young woman taken out from the gates of the prison and tied to the pillory is a daughter of her time. However, in the final scenes of the novel Prynne could easily become an associate of the outstanding women of the 19th century. This tells about transformation of her character throughout the novel.

The main feature that distinguishes Hester from other characters is her ability to grow. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth degrade and die, but Hester is moving forward and upward. In many episodes, she appears as a romantic heroine, who has an independent thought, capable of strong feeling and ready to fight for it. Such a character would be appropriate in any novel of the mid-19th century, dedicated to the New Women.

Was Hawthorne aware of the danger, conjugated with the introduction of such an ahistorical image in a historical novel? Apparently, yes. In any case, from the very beginning the author gently suggests to the reader the idea of inner strength of Hester and her ability for independent thinking. Dimmesdale was made a prisoner of religion and Chillingworth is a captive of fanatical passion. Consciousness of Hester is initially free. She has a quality, which was so highly valued by transcendentalists – the ability to face the reality with a look, not burdened by the load of the past and its traditions. Society condemned Hester for the expropriation, which had to destroy her. However, this did not happen. Loneliness has become a school for her wisdom and freedom.
