Basically, the whole story opens with Pip is introduced to readers and he is described as a young boy staring at his parents’ gravestones. He feels terrified when he sees some man dressed in prison clothing who tells him that he needs to bring him some food if he wants to live. After that, Pips runs home to a sister called Mrs. Joe who is an angry and loud woman who always reminds everyone of the difficulties that she had to go through to raise Pip. He takes some food and brings it to the escaped convict, but this man is later caught by soldiers, so this even soon disappears from his mind.
One evening, Mrs. Joe returns home and claims that Pip will soon go to play to Miss Havisham who is a wealthy and grim woman living in a large house. This is where he meets Estella, a girl of his age who seems to be quite pretty and proud. It’s no wonder he immediately falls in love with her and he keeps loving her for the rest of this story. It’s obvious that he feels insulted, but he starts thinking that there’s something wrong with him and he wants to change that. Pip often visits Estella and learns more about their quite strange lifestyle. For example, Miss Havisham can bring him in a huge banquet hall full of old food touched only by rats and spiders. She is visited by her relatives, but they come only twice a year: at her wedding day and birthday.
Pip starts imagining himself a wealthy gentleman, but this dream is stopped by Miss Havisham who refuses from his visits. He also feels ashamed of his house and trade and he wants to become a part of her environment. This story is full of interesting twists, and readers should discover it in detail to have their own opinion about characters, important themes, and settings.
