Trapped by Her Emotions

Feeling trapped is a feeling that people often experience in their everyday life. Such a feeling is also often used in literature. In this paper, I will use three pieces of literature in order to show vivid cases of feeling trapped by different people. In three stories, the people trapped differentenly. Generally, the stories have lots of differences.

"The Story of an Hour” was written by Kate Chopin in 1894. In this story, Mrs. Mallard receives news about her husband’s death. The woman has mixed emotions about her feelings towards this event. In the beginning, she feels grief and sorrow, but then she starts feeling relief because she felt trapped by her inconsistent love for her husband. She loved him sometimes, but sometimes she did not love him. Although the feelings of the woman toward her husband were not strong, she decided to stay with him. That is why when she finds out about his death, she feels like a weight is lifted off her chest. For now on she starts being free, and she expresses her realization of escaping her trap and of a new beginning.

Sometimes people are not trapped by emotions but by need. It is possible to become trapped if you are not able to function normally in society without the other people’s assistance. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” a short story by James Thurber in 1939, the main character is Walter Mitty. He is a man who escapes society and dreams of being someone important and respected. In his life, he is not idolized by his wife, and that is why he starts to imagine that he lives a more extravagant life. At the same time, he is not able to sustain a healthy life without his wife. He finds challenging doing even simple daily chores without her help. He is obviously trapped by own inability to live in a real world. He does not pay enough attention to real things, and that is why he often dreams of being an important person. He could become another person and, maybe, a hero in real life if he paid more attention to the events in the real world.

Oedipus Rex is an Athenian tragedy written by Sophocles. For the first time, it was performed around 429 BC. In this story, an oracle makes predictions of the characters. King Laius believes the prediction of the oracle, which forces him to arrange the murder of his own son. It seems like fates of all the characters are predicted, and no matter what they do, the prediction will be fulfilled. The story shows people being trapped by own fate.
