A Profound American Writer Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist and short-story writer of the twentieth century. His works are crisp, laconic, and they impress with their emotionally restrained statements. The writer’s works influenced profoundly the other American writers. Many of his stories are considered to be the classics of American literature, and some of them have even been put on the screen.

Hemingway's concise writing style often seems too simple and it feels like a child could have written that. However, it makes a complex effect on a reader. Hemingway provides detached descriptions of action and uses simple nouns and verbs to describe scenes precisely. By doing so he avoids conveying the emotions and thoughts of his characters directly. He prefers to give the reader the raw material of experience and does not show the point of view of the author. He strives to give readers the feeling that they participate in the events themselves. Hemingway had an aspiration for accuracy in writing. He believed that a writer could treat a subject honestly only if he had participated in it or observed it in proximity.

Hemingway is also called the writer “of lost generation”. He is one of the most prominent writers of the time between the two world wars. His early works depicted the lives of two types of people. The first type represented the men and women deprived of faith in the moral values by World War I. They were cynical and did not care about anything but their own emotions. The other type consisted of people of simple character and primitive emotions. Hemingway wrote of their courageous and useless battles against circumstances.

The earliest works of Hemingway are the collections of short stories. “Three Stories and Ten Poems” was his first work written in 1923. “In Our Time” was written in 1924 and reflected his experiences as a young man in northern Michigan woods. “Men Without Women” was written in 1927. "The Killers" was remarkable for its description of upcoming doom. “Winner Take Nothing” written in 1933 was the book of stories characterizing people in desperate circumstances in Europe. The novel that established Hemingway's reputation was called “The Sun Also Rises” and was written in 1926. It was about the group of morally weak Americans and Englishmen living in France and Spain who were the representatives of the “lost generation” of the post-World War I period.
