Of Love and Other Demons in Magical Realism

In the famous novel “Of Love and Other Demons”, Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the technique of so-called magical realism. It means the style of writing which combines the realistic events and situations with fantasy and myth. Throughout the novel, the writer uses very real situations but twists them with the magical and intelligent drops of color, smell, touch and sight.

The reader begins to read the first chapter and it is not so hard to believe that the rabid dog runs in the streets in the small town of Colombia. Of course, there is nothing that can belong to the concept of the slave bargaining, or even the mind of the mother who is so sick from drug addiction. Even in spite of this, Gabriel Garcia Marquez brings to the life and especially for readers that ash-gray colored dog, who has the white blaze on its forehead. This amazing creature bursting onto the rough terrain of the market, and the reader can probably feel the burst of the wind that is made by a dog and see the dirtiness on its fur. In ‘Of Love and Other Demons’ one more character appears. Bernarda Cabrera is demonstrated as the mother who looks really failed and can’t do anything with herself. Her appearance, lifestyle, and behavior are described best and detail in the first chapter, when the author writes that Bernarda’s eyes were so extinguished and her wits dulled. Garcia Marquez also mentions that her main character that the vomited bile and blood; Bernarda’s sirens body became as copper and bloated as an old corpse which is three-day old. These words help to demonstrate the whole image of the characters and how real they are in their world.

On the different level, there is the placement of the house in the plantation. It was placed obviously next to the Divina Pastora Asylum for the Female Lunatics. There are some opinions why the author chose this particular establishment. But the most common and trustful is that Gabriel Marquez chose this building which is next to the plantation to demonstrate the absurdity of the people who live in the house and the foreshadowing the events which are going to be realized. Such character as Sierva Maria is full of the magical realism. This woman lives in the place where she may be touched by the very little of the insanity living in the house. In addition, this character is the only one in this novel who can receive and give the real love. For the first time, it is to Dominga, and later to Fr. Delaura.
