The obligations given to us by God can also be seen as the moral commitments we have to follow in life. These commitments are true both for religious morality and for the one common to all mankind. What Christian morality teaches us is how to be righteous and happy at the same time, and how to make the ones around us happy. The obligations given to us in the Bible are meant to show us what a harmonious life should be like.
For instance, the testament given in the Bible teaches the husbands to love their wives and not to be harsh with them. It means that God wants men to develop their masculinity, but not at the expense of their women. He teaches men to be kind to women and strong spiritually. He wants them to take care of weaker ones, and to understand that a woman is tender and should be protected. This will be the foundation for a solid and happy family.
The other example of God given obligation would be paying taxes. The Bible says that we should pay to all what is owed to them. These are either taxes, revenue, respect, or honor. This example shows us that God wants us to be humble and pure. Paying taxes and not hiding your revenue is the example of decent behavior. Respecting and honoring those who are wiser and older than us is also another obligation of ours. As for government authorities, they should remember that their power is not ultimate and that they were instituted by God. This means that even though the power was given to them by God’s will, they should respect their citizens and provide for their well-being. They are not allowed to use their power in any evil way or for their own profit. When governments enrich themselves through high taxes or stealing from their people, they break the God’s law.
The Bible and moral obligations also teach us that it is more blessed to give than receive. This can be done through helping others and not being selfish. It is a good idea to take part in charity, because this is an example of the selfless act.
The illustration of fidelity God wants us to preserve is the obligation to be married to the same person until death parts the two people. Of course, following this rule keeps marriage sacred and teaches people to develop true love. This is the kind of love which can overcome all the obstacles and seductions. Adultery is strictly criticized by God. The situations in life are certainly diverse, and it is not always possible to stay in the same marriage for a lifetime for different reasons. This obligation God wants the people to follow depicts what a life should be like ideally.
