Gender Roles in American Society

Often it is a social society that dictates right behavior to a man and a woman, making them to make the right decision. Personal opinion of a person is overshadowed. With this approach, people cannot be happy.

Gender roles in society, as a rule, are linked to the religious, cultural, and economic outlook on life, which directly affect the patterns of behavior of men and women.

Many social scientists consider the parents as a powerful driving force for gender-role socialization. The first idea of what it means to be a boy or girl, the child usually receives from parents. Parents often have different expectations for girls and boys and express these expectations in the process of interaction with their children. Little girls are often given more attention than little boys.

Today, more and more parents try to avoid imposing gender stereotypes on their children. However, many still continue to encourage the participation of their children in typical gender forms of the game, and the implementation of relevant domestic responsibilities. Even in cases where the parents are making a conscious effort, trying to refrain from teaching their children gender roles, some behaviors can seem so natural that children do them at an unconscious level.

Parents, especially fathers who have only daughters, are much more eager to gender equality than parents of sons. This fact indicates that in American society, which often favors men, the desire to ensure the best possible future for their children can encourage parents of girls to practice the principles of gender equity in the education of their daughters.

Another powerful active force of gender-role socialization is television. Images of men and women on television in the U.S. are often overtly stereotypical. Thus, men are usually portrayed active, intelligent, and enterprising and act in leadership roles. Women are more likely to play a passive role and less competent. Such women are better at performing domestic duties. In advertising and even TV news men are usually represented as authoritative experts on most of the issues. We can assume that these images have a definite impact on the socialization process, considering the fact that young people every day spend many hours in front of TV.

Analysis of popular TV comedies of 1950-1990s suggests that while the image of gender equality over the past years has become more common, gender stereotypes in the 1990s remained the norm. One of the most popular programs in the history of TV of 1990s, Home Improvement, received the lowest scores in terms of gender equality.
