Paper on Ode to Autumn

John Keats is the poet of the younger generation of British Romantics. The greatest works of Keats were written when he was 23 years old. In the last year of his life he almost walked away from the literary work. Keats died at the age of 25.

In the Victorian era Keats was one of the most popular British poets. Pre-Raphaelites especially admired him. Not only poetry, but also the letters of Keats are marked with a seal of a genius.

Keats’s poetry brought to the English Romanticism new element of Hellenism, as well as the cult of beauty and harmonious enjoyment of life. The strength of Hellenism of Keats is seen in one of his poems Ode to Autumn.

Ode to Autumn is the most earthly of the odes of Keats. Ode to Autumn sounds like a farewell to the life of the poet. Ode to Autumn is a kind of result of a brief career of the poet. The poem in full-blooded colors of sensory-specific images talks about the beauty of earthly existence.

Ode to Autumn written in September 1819 was the last major work of Keats.

Special charm of the Ode to Autumn is even though it shows the most ordinary phenomena of rural life –the ones that have been noticed a hundred times, all of them are depicted in an unexpected light, from an unexpected point of view, and stand before the reader as though for the first time. The ode is based on a thin and subtle comparison. We see something familiar and pleasant, but at the same time we are stunned with the novelty. We are captured by generous abundance of farewell feast of nature and absolute simplicity of the components of the ode, strict objectivity, and the lyrical mood of tension.

Keats depicts autumn as a toiler and peasant that is tirelessly decorating and cultivating the land. The autumn is all in action. The description of autumn is represented with a series of verbs that characterize its concerns and everything it needs to do. Dynamic of verbs gives this description of the fall special swiftness, special breadth, and promotes the integrity of perception, which creates a certain verbal and emotional stress.

Keats’s poetry, its musicality and picturesque, visual tangibility of its images, the abundance of expressive and colorful details, which transmit not only color, but also their shades, and its emotional depth were appreciated after a long delay. The true understanding of the role of Keats in the history of English literature was formed only in the 20th century. At the time came an understanding that his work has an enormous influence on many poets of the Victorian era. Tribute to Keats was given by Alfred Tennyson in his early works. Keats’s poems were read by the Pre-Raphaelites and Walter Pater rightly called it the forerunner of aestheticism.
