Red Wines all Around the Globe

Nevertheless, you don’t need to worry about it and we will consider the best and the most popular varieties of red wines.

So let’s start with Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is really famous and great wine. It is grown in almost every winemaking region in the world. It ripens late and can be quite weedy. It is used as a single varietal and as a main blending component. Cabernet Sauvignon’s color is deep and almost impermeable to light. Oak, which is in the barrel, is used to make softer the tannins and make the varietal more approachable. Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and an excellent wine to pair with grilled or braised beef dish, steaks or burgers etc.

Syrah/Shiraz. There are two names for the same variety. In Australia, it is called Shiraz and in other places Syrah. It is usually planted in hot regions like Australia, California, Rhone Valley in France, Italy's Piedmont region. The Shiraz variety gives hearty and spicy reds. Shiraz is often used to produce average wines, but it can produce some of the world’s best, deepest, reds with interesting flavors and great longevity.

Another popular red wine varietal and blending grape is Merlot. It is well-known by its dark color which is often coupled with blueberry. Merlot has softer tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon and it has full flavors even when young, because of this Merlot is one of the most drinkable and affordable of all red wines. It is usually grown in Bordeaux, Italy, and Northern California. Merlot is softer and lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon. It can be easily paired with grilled steaks, duck, lamb, turkey, pork, and veal.

Pinot noir is one of the noblest red wine grapes in the world. It is grown in Oregon, California, Burgundy (France), Germany and New Zealand. It is considered that Burgundy produces the best Pinot noir in the world. It completely differs from Cabernet Sauvignon and has delicate and fresh structure. Pinot noir is full-bodied and pairs with grilled or roasted lean beef, chicken, roast duck, lamb etc.

Malbec has its origin from France, but it is mainly grown in Argentina because winemakers have found perfect conditions to grow this fruit in Argentina. Malbec’s characteristics depend on where it is grown. It perfectly pairs with all types of meat.

Zinfandel a very versatile wine grape. It is used to produce different styles of wines. Zinfandel is grown in California but its origin is from Italy. This wine greatly pairs with burgers, pizza, and sausages.
