The Gender Rules of Women in Othello

Shakespeare portrayed women seeking, if not for equality with a man, but to free themselves from the dictates of men in family life.

Shakespeare – is opponent deification woman, this old ritual of courtly love. In his plays, they appears in real life situation. Shakespeare likes his educated women who have a sense of humor, do not climb her words and able to confound verbal duels with any man.

Also, Shakespeare has sympathetic attitude toward women. Perhaps this sympathy is nowhere as clear as in "Othello". Female image to which Shakespeare refers to a special sympathy, this is Desdemona. She is the victim of two intersecting male aspirations - cunning villain Iago and jealousy of her husband.

Perhaps nowhere in the plays of Shakespeare man does not look in such a degraded form, as in "Othello." More recently, a brilliant commander, who takes so high and before the military authority of which tend all doges of Venice, because of some little slander at his wife turns into a pathetic animal losing every human qualities and dreaming of only one thing - her death and blood.

There are many interpretations of "Othello", but most of them do not apply to Desdemona and Othello. Many authors emphasize his pathological jealousy, others - his pathological credulity. However, very few people are interested in the causes of the tragedy of Desdemona itself. And they are as complete absence of personal freedom for women. As Desdemona says she cannot leave the right to be close with the father and husband, and should, as in feudal law, go from one to another.

The husband has the right to fully dispose of her life and destiny, and she dies, regardless of whether he is jealous or gullible person. In fact, as shown by Shakespeare, she has no right to it, listened to it.

Modern feminists often reproached Shakespeare because he was not sufficiently advocate of women. Indeed, Shakespeare never pretended to be a fighter for women's rights. He sympathized with the women, the best of his character are not inferior to men, they are educated, witty, and they have the freedom of mind and are able to fend for themselves in difficult situations. But Shakespeare never claimed to be a reformer of family and marriage.

However, Shakespeare convincingly demonstrated the heroic struggle of women for that to be a man in society, which recognized her as a woman only. And if he was not a supporter of feminism in the traditional sense, it is impossible not to admire and enjoy the variety he created images of women.
