The History of Eyeliner

Cosmetics are as old as mankind. Descriptions of face painting are mentioned in the Old Testament, it is also known that the shades for the eyes were used by the Egyptians during funeral rites.

Eyeliner is a cosmetic that is applied around the contours of eyes to create an aesthetic effect.

For the first time, eyeliner was used in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt as a dark line around the eyes. In 10,000 BC Egyptians applied cosmetics not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to protect skin. There is a lot of proof of heavily lined eyes in ancient Egyptian art. The eyeliner was made of various materials, including antimony and copper ore.

The 1920s was the period when eyeliner was used in large quantities and with great success for the first time in the Western world. As a result of detection of the tomb of Tutankhamun, we saw that in Egypt women with pleasure used eyeliner to create a fashionable image. Subtle makeup was popular in 1920s and movie stars such as Louise Brooks began to use lightly greased eyeliner for the first time.

In 1930s, eyeliner was applied very close to the lashes. To fill the space between the lashes only liquid eyeliner was used at the time, but the makeup was not plentiful. An example of the style of this period was Marlene Dietrich.

Despite the fact that eyeliner is one of the key elements in the reconstruction of the image of the 1940s, during the Second World War it was largely flattened. At this time, blurriness and shape were out of fashion and very thin lines were used to emphasize the upper lashes. This trend is showed by Lana Turner.

In the 1950s, there was a return to the feminine images, as in post-war fashion a special emphasis was placed on the shape. Such celebrities as Brigitte Bardot began to use the image, combining dark eye makeup and bright make-up lips. This image became the main theme of this era. In contrast to the conservative use of the past decade, eyeliner was applied around the eyes and at the edge of the eyelids.

This was the period of the greatest popularity of eyeliner in the 20th century. In the 1960s, it became fashionable to use undertone and liner, which offered more than just excessive use of black color. The image of Edie Sedgwick was accepted and considered very trendy.

After expressive lines of the 1960s, in the 1970s, eyeliners significantly softened. Warm brown tones have taken the place of sharp black lines, and more natural style was in fashion.
