Throughout the history of humanity, the advancements of the technologies that created the civilizations have always been in connection with the development of energy sources. Fire is considered to be the first energy technology which was created by humans, along with the people labor, it became the main source of energy. Of course, it was supplemented by the animals for transportation and agriculture. In fact, the dawn of agriculture is dated for 10 000 years ago. As long also waterpower and wind were used for the milling grain.
In the late 1700’s George Stephenson developed the steam engine. And this was the reason of technological breakthrough that led to the revolution in the industrial sphere. For the first time, human history tells the transportation could be provided without the help and use of domesticated animals. And cows and bulls helped to transport the most necessary goods because it wasn’t even the imagination about the other vehicles which would make this process easier. Steam engines were used for the complete work of steam tractors, steam locomotives and steamships. People tried to use and establish stationary steam engines in all the major existed industries. Firewood was considered to be the major fuel for the steam engines. The end of 1800’s was the time when the demand for energy was rapidly increased and the firewood around industrial centers became scarce. Later this led to the switch to coal as the main source of energy and fuel. Coal became widely used in lots of industries and spheres of life. That is why it was used not only for powering the steam engines, but also for cooking, heating and industrial processes.
As for the air pollution, it was far worse during the Industrial revolution than we can see today. Except the smoke and fumes which caused obscuring visibility, they also were the causes for serious problems with health to the inhabitants of the areas of industrial development reducing life expectancies and respiratory diseases.
It was the period of 1880’s years when the considerable development of some processes produced an alternative to steam the power. It is said about the development of the good drilling technology, internal combustion engine and the capacity to refine the crude oil into some other liquid fuels including gasoline. The pollution of the air was greatly reduced when the usage of fuel oil furnaces, gasoline, diesel engines and coal-fired steam engines were replaced on the furnaces.
