Terrifying reality of life in war poetry post 1914

1914 is a year when the World War I began. It finished in 1918 and during four years of war a lot of people died and even more were wounded. It may be strange, but it was very enthusiastic at the very beginning. A lot of young men wanted to become volunteers in 1914. It was enough to look at posters, newspapers, magazines and even poems, to see that young generation see war as fun and heroic thing. A lot of young poets, like Harold Bedgie and Jessie Pope also had a lot of inspiration, so they were glad write about, as they thought, great war.

Many soldiers civilians wrote about war. Some of them were highly inspired, some of them understood that real war is not a game. Yet, it is always scary and dangerous and this situation with inspiring poetry had changed with time, because everyone understood that, first of all, war brings death and it always terrifying. Such authors as Wilfred Owen, who actually took part in this war, knew what it means to fight, to kill and to survive that is why, his poems were not so enthusiastic. He had an anti-war attitude and with time a lot of other people accepted that war is not a great thing and it can’t be fun. Owen blamed Pope and his pro-war poem, because he thought that person, who sit at home, but inspires others to fight isn't worth attention. Writers as Owen wanted to demonstrate truth about war in their poems, even if it is scary.

About ten millions soldiers and about seven millions civilians died in that war, it can't be called something good. The horror that people saw in that war was so great, they couldn't forget about it very long years. Poets, as those who presented the thoughts of people, wrote about the brutalities and losses in life in new ways. In 1918 Wilfred Owen published his famous book, where he wrote about about war and the pity of war. Poetry after 1914, doesn’t have such heroic motives and glory of the war, it is full of scepticism, realism and bitter irony. Detailed fight battles is what readers can see when they read poems of those days. By describing these, they wanted to explain that war is something bad that ruins people lives. All this is very sad, but this war brought its world really great poets such as Rainer Mria Rilke, Andre Breton, Wilhelm Klemm, Aleksandr Block, Robert Nichols, David Jones and many other heroic names, who tried to do something, to change the situation for better using their poems.
