This was the time, when people were tired of unrealistic plots of plays, wanting to see something new and unusual, but realistic and even about true and romantic feelings.
Now people remained the Pal Joey, which was the musical comedy telling about the low life of Chicago’s North Side. Created in 1940, this play was known not only for the incredible story, but for the personalities of its characters. The most unique thins was that there were not usual characters which could be found in other musicals, but the characters were real people. The leading character –man Joey – was a performer in a local nightclub, and the lady Vera was a seductress who picked Joey up.
The successful play “Pal Joey” was written by John O’Hara with the help of Robert Alton and George Abbot. The story begins with the letter from Joey to Ted. The main plot of the story is that the main female character Vera is infatuated with the handsome Joey. The man shows his interest in her, and even intents than he has romantic feelings to her. In the return Vera buys his own nightclub for Joey. Joey’s friends, who know him thanks to the old club, come to the new one. Some of them are so jealous of the romantic relationships of their friend and his fortune in business. That is why they decide to blackmail Vera because of her affairs with Joey. And these actions lead to the downward fall.
The play received lots of different reviews from the critics, and it had 374 performances in the first year after its creation in 1940. People liked the story which connected the love and failure. But in 1950s the play “Pal Joey” was remade in full measure and after this it had a bigger success among people.
“Lady in the Dark” is the bright example of the great plays, which will never be able to be remade into the musical play. It is so because such plays are as good as they were when they were first produced. For example, the play “Lady in the Dark” was firstly produced in 1941.
