Hazing is ritualized, cruel or degrading treatment during initiation at the entry to a specific group, and further maintenance of the hierarchy in this group. The problem of hazing exists in high schools, universities, sports, and military communities. The manifestations of bullying that are not associated with the exploitation of the victims, but with the humiliation of their dignity, called hazing. Traditions of hazing exist in many North American fraternities.
We know that men have inherited from animal ancestors, on the one hand, increased aggression, and on the other hand, a tendency to form groups, unions, and communities that are closed to women and other outsiders. All men’s communities are organized hierarchically based on domination and subordination status; you can achieve status in them by the individual competition, one by one, and by the formation of competing with each other alliances and coalitions.
More or less legalized and institutionalized individual gang violence exists, even at high schools. Its most common form is hazing.
Gang violence associated with certain social and age status is called hazing. Most dictionaries define hazing as a form of disciplinary activity carried out by the power of fuss, jokes and coarse jokes, often with painful or humiliating trials.
There can be physical (corporal) and mental (symbolic) hazing.
Cultural and historical hazing is a kind of modern equivalent of the ancient rites of transition and initiation associated with the entry to the closed male community, whether it is a primitive age class, student fraternity, or sports team. Although the name is relatively recent, a phenomenon in itself that combines the legal form of gang violence and the way to establish intra-hierarchy is very old.
Hazing at high schools combines elements of violence, games, and sadomasochistic homosexuality. Since the ratio of these motives can be different, some participants of hazing consider it a relatively harmless game. But if you join a group is not a matter of free choice or if its leader is a person with sadistic qualities, game rituals easily turn into a very real gang violence.
Hazing still exists both in the criminal world, and in many quite safe schools, colleges and sports clubs, to join which the newcomers have to go through a humiliating initiation ritual. They can be stripped naked, shave off the hair, are subjected to flogging, beat, rape, force masturbation, touch or kiss someone else’s genitals, and so on. There is a broad international campaign against hazing.
