The Goals of prominent city-state Sparta

Sparta was one of the most famous and well-known city-states in ancient Greece. In antiquity, Sparta was known as Lacedaemon. Sparta is well known because of its education and military power. They proved that strength didn't lie in numbers, it lay in Spartan discipline. This outstanding city was founded as a small city that had to fight only to protect themselves from enemies. Spartans just wanted to avoid the defeat from other city-states and they were close enough. Spartans used self-denial, strong discipline and harsh training and that helped them to focus their attention on their goals. Men in Sparta were brilliant warriors and everyone in ancient Greece knew it. Indeed, Sparta didn’t wage war any more lightly then any other army, Sparta simply waged it better. The main and important issue was Spartan education, which was completely different from Athenians. The main purpose of Spartan education was to produce well-qualified soldiers. Military training began at the age of 7 for all Spartan boys. They trained hard until the age of 18 and were taught to take pain and hardship with pride. Spartan young boys were taught javelin-throwing, discus-throwing, wrestling and swimming. The main idea was that young men have to learn stealth and cunning. So, as we can see the strong was one of the most important goals of Sparta. In Sparta lived citizens, helots, periokoi and slaves. The largest class of people were the helots. Actually, helots were free farmers whom the Spartans had defeated in battle. After that these farmers were enslaved. However, they were in an intermediate position between the serfs and slaves. The Perioikoi did not enjoy full citizen-rights, but they were free and not subjected to the same restrictions as the helots. There is an opinion that they served as a kind of military reserve. Therefore, another goal was to control the helots or slaves from the neighboring conquered region. We can also pick out that establishing supremacy on Peloponnese by fighting the Arcadians, Tegeans and Argives was also extremely important for Spartans. It was very significant for Spartan society to keep good relations with Delphi, the religious center. Nevertheless, the main goal of Sparta was living in peace and protecting their city. They never had walls and they had to prevent the destruction by being the most dominant force. Spartans conquered only those who were their enemies and lived next to them.
