The sophistication of the human brain
Humans are known for their big brains and we can say that our brains are one of the most sophisticated and exciting things in the world. However, we’ve got a lot of questions. Why is human brain so complex? How did we come so intelligent? Why did we learn to speak? What is the difference between our brains and monkey’s or dolphin’s? There is only one thing that can answer these questions. This thing is a theory of evolution.
Darwin’s theory of evolution posits animals well suited to their environment survive - and pass on their genes. Animals that are not well suited dies before they have offspring. During millions of years of evolution, this has led to an amazing array of different creatures and organisms on our planet. However, human brains have a bit different story. Human brains had an enormous number of mutations in a short period of time to get more complex cognitive abilities.
So, our brain has been evolving during all the history. The size of primates' brains is double what is expected for mammals of the same size. However, across millions of years, the human brain has tripled in size, especially in the past two million years. It’s quite difficult to determine brain changes over time. We can just measure the inside of ancient skulls and this will give us some information about the volumes of those brains and some details about it. For the first two-thirds of our history, the size of human brains was about as modern apes have today. For example, Australopithecus afarensis had skulls that hold about 400-550 milliliters. At the same time, chimpanzee had skulls with volumes about 400 ml and gorillas about 500-700 ml. However, during this time Australopithecine brains began to change and evolve.
Researchers say that sophistication of the brain isn’t a result of steady evolution. Human brains evolved extremely fast. The final third of our evolution saw nearly all the action in brain size. Nevertheless, our ancestors reached more than 1,000 ml by 500,000 years ago. Modern people have brains about 1200ml or more, the same as early Homo sapiens had. Our culture, technologies, and language improved a lot, so our brains grew to accommodate the changes. We can see that the shape has changed in the regions related to planning, communication, and other more advanced cognitive functions. So, our brain is fantastic and amazing thing that continues evolving and no one knows how intelligent we could become in the future.
