Isolation in Acquainted with the Night, by Robert Frost

We’re going to talk about Robert Frost’s one of the most well-known poems. It was first published in 1928 in his collection West-Running Brook.

The writing is often read exactly as the poet’s admission of having faced depression and a vivid depiction of what that unique experience feels like. In this book "the night" stands for depression, and the narrator describes in detail how he perceives the world around him in this state of mind. In spite of the fact, he’s in a city, the author feels entirely isolated from everything around him.

Iambic pentameter is what was used to write this poem, including 14 lines like a sonnet, and also with a terza rima rhyme scheme, following the complex pattern, aba bcb cdc dad aa. Terza rima was created by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri for The Divine Comedy, his epic poem. Since Italian is a language in which a great number of words feature vowel endings, terza rima appears to be less problem to write in Italian than it’s in English. Due to its difficulty, very few authors in English have tried the form. However, Frost turned to be a skilled master of many forms, and the given literary work is just one of the most prominent examples of an American poem created in terza rima.

The narrator describes in detail his choking solitude as he wanders down the avenues of the isolated town at night. When wandering, he has walked beyond the city scopes, but found nothing to comfort him in his melancholia. Even when making contact with another character, the narrator’s unwilling to express his feelings. It is because he familiar for sure that no one will properly understand him. At one point he hears a cry from a street nearby, though realizes that it’s not indicate for him, nobody’s awaiting him. He looks up at the moon in the sky and it’s clear to him that time has no meaning for him as his isolation will never stop.

Strict and iambic pentameter is used in this poem, with the 14 lines of a classical sonnet. As for rhyme scheme, the author makes use of the terza rima pattern of ABA CDC DAD AA, that is extremely troublesome to write in English.

The given poem is usually considered to be a detailed illustration of the narrator’s vivid experiences with depression. Complete isolation is the most significant element of his despair. Frost emphasizes it by utilizing the first-person term “I” in the first seven lines. Even considering that the watchman boasts a physical presence in the poem, he actually doesn’t play a mental or emotional role.
