Life Story Of J Robert Oppenhiemer

Legendary and bright J. Robert Oppenheimer is fondly remembered as the father of the American School of Theoretical Physics. His indisputable contributions in the field of science include the ‘’Born-Oppenheimer approximation’, the advent of nuclear weapons as well as his researches on electrons and positrons. From his childhood days, he turned to be a highly talented kid. He completed schooling in an extremely short span of time. Notwithstanding this fact, he entered Harvard a year late, aged eighteen, owing to ill-health from colitis. As a man of perseverance, he was keen on making up for his lost years by simply taking six courses in every term at college. That way he utilized his time to the maximum. Oppenheimer turned to be a member of the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, exactly where he was deeply inspired by Percy Bridgman’s teachings on thermodynamics, that proved to be a turning point in his scientific career.

He appeared to be the first physicist to point out the very existence of black holes, though, unfortunately, Oppenheimer lacked the patience to validate his theory. By the way, Luis Alvarez, a Nobel Prize physicist had revealed that Oppenheimer would have won a Nobel Prize for his work on black holes as well as neutrons, if he had enough patience to substantiate his theory with a true experiment. Being a three-time nominee of the Nobel Prize, Oppenheimer backed Leftist Communities in the political arena and appreciated the Sanskrit language.

Childhood and early life

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was given birth by Julius Oppenheimer, a rich textile importer as well as Ella Friedman, a painter by profession. The scientist’s parents were German-Jews. In 1888 they had immigrated to the USA.

In 1922, Oppenheimer entered Harvard College for the purpose of learning chemistry, though later, he studied history, literature, mathematics, theoretical as well as experimental physics. The scientist graduated from that educational institution in 1925.

Oppenheimer joined Christ’s College, Cambridge University and served at the Cavendish Laboratory. Soon famous British physicist, J.J Thomson offered him a job. Thomson agreed to take him on the condition Oppenheimer completed a fundamental laboratory course.
