Over-Commercialization and Over-Hyping of Athletes By Their Agents

Sports and money in the modern world are almost synonyms, especially if we are talking about professional sports. Fortunately or not, the times of the Greek Olympics are long gone, and the sport has welcomed new technologies, methodology, requirements and money. Now the sport is a big business.

The billionaires buy famous sports clubs and the shares of the purchased teams become the subject of lively trading on the stock exchanges. Manufacturers of sports clothes and equipment are true multinationals, trendsetters, which capture not only sports but also everyday life. Fees of tennis players, football players, racers of Formula 1 and many other sports stars are the subject of discussion and envy around the world. All these are causes of the over commercialization and over-hyping of athletes by their agents.

It is still a bothering question for many ordinary people wondering why so many athletes get stratospheric fees. No one argues that they have to perform high-level athletic art and are capped to compete at international scale. However, a few worldwide events a year do not amount to deserve millions of dollars in comparison with the average athletes. Now sports celebrities appear on TV screen on a par with famous movie stars. But the most disgusting thing is that they complain of being underpaid.

Athletes’ agents are those who greatly contribute to the issue of sports commercialization. They establish the price on the athlete’s participation in the contest, demand escalator clause in the contracts, negotiate with the recruiting clubs, specify athlete’s rider and perform a lot of activities to make their client richer and richer every other day.

The sportsmen are caught into the financial trap. They are on the hook of their agents who decide everything for them. Along with the competition among talented sportsmen, their agents fight on the commercial field. Their work can be compared with the stock exchange speculation where they buy and sell pursuing bigger gains. The more they are paid for the sportsman, the more they earn.

Who knows what this or that sports celebrity would have achieved on if they had not been ruled by the sports agents? Something prompts me that they would have done more if the agents had not interfered into their career. Moreover, the sport of today would be grounded only on athletic prowess, competitiveness and will.

Sports and money in the modern world are almost synonyms, especially if we are talking about professional sports. Fortunately or not, the times of the Greek Olympics are long gone, and the sport has welcomed new technologies, methodology, requirements and money. Now the sport is a big business.
