James Joyce's Eveline

This is one of the most interesting novels about love written by James Joyce. Of course, it is about “Eveline”. The main character is nineteen-year-old girl Evelin who lives in Ireland. Her family consists of her, her father and two younger children. Unfortunately, her mother with one of her older brothers died and the other older brother works away from the home. Evelin knows what is money and how is difficult to earn them for the family. Even when she meets the nice guy, her father forbids her to meet with him more. In spite of all the unhappy moments in the life, young Eveline never gives up and does her best for herself and for her family.

Evelin works in the store, does all the housework, looks after children and even helps the father to bring them up. Once she met the young sailor. His name is Frank. Later Evelin was attracted to this guy. Knowing about Frank, Evelin’s father forbids her to see and meet with Frank. It had no importance for the young couple, because Frank and Evelin had planned to leave Buenos Aires, the place where Frank lived. They are going to run away together, but at the end of the story we know that Evelin’s decision is not to leave with the young sailor.

The readers understand that Eveline likes Frank, and he really likes the beautiful girl, there is not any remaining of the word “love”. By the way, young sailor is so cultured and he likes music so much. It can’t be said about Evelin’s father who differs a lot from the Frank. And that is why men can’t find something common and everyone pressers Eveline. The young woman was attracted Frank when she met him for the first time. She says that he is so beautiful and it seems to be his face is made of bronze. Frank also describes Eveline as manly, kind and open-hearted girl. Eveline is too excited when Frank asks her to go to Buenos Aires with him. Of course, it is in such a way, because he tells her about the tales and legends of distant countries, Straits of Magellan and the stories of the awful Patagonians. It is not surprise that Evelyn is so intrigued and wants to know about all these stories more.

Reader is the witness of the relationships between Eveline and her father and Eveline and Frank. In fact, both differ from each other. Her father is focused on the money, and Eveline always should squabble with the father to get more weekly provisions. Eveline’s father becomes to get drunk more and more, that is why he quarrels with his daughter for the money and, of course, for her relationships with young sailor Frank.
