The Non-ethical Practice of Environmental Racism

The problem of environmental discrimination is long overdue, but only now it has become an urgent concern for different environmental groups and public authorities, as more and more people began to actively advocate for their environmental rights. Less rich countries can't afford to spend money on environmental protection, and, therefore, are forced to live in less favourable conditions.

The term “environmental racism” is understood as inequality in the external environment, which entails a deterioration of the health status of the people belonging to different races and minorities. Since recently it has been regarded as one more form of racial discrimination.

Environmental racism affects all spheres of social life, namely, employment, accommodation, education, landfills and hazardous waste disposals, land assets, etc. Discrimination based on ecological principle arises either within the state or internationally. For example, the emerging countries under different pretexts are forced to store nuclear and chemical waste from abroad on their territories. Foreign manufacturers often squeeze dry the natural resources of the country neglecting the environment protection. Particularly acute is the problem of environmental segregation in the food, agricultural, cosmetic, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Developed countries bring their hazardous industries outside their territories. Thus, the population of discriminated countries suffers from pollution due to lack of economic or political power and small opportunities to say "no” that is considered as an environmental injustice.

The restriction of the national minorities’ rights in environmental terms is the allocation of certain territories in the city and rural areas, forced resettlement, limiting business opportunities, mobility, qualified health care and education. Despite national minorities, environmental racism impacts the poor, immigrants, and refugees.

That is why the movement for environmental justice is currently gaining an increasing popularity. The efforts of environmental human rights activists are aimed at eliminating existing inequities and reforming public policy in order to incorporate environmental justice into the human rights and environmental law.
